Van Buren Arkansas, an old stagecoach stop and steamboat port was named after President Martin
Van Buren. It also served as a supply point for gold prospectors and was the site of a Civil War
battle in 1862.

In 1686, Frenchmen established the first settlement on the lower Mississippi near the Arkansas River. The area became American soil in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. A divided Arkansas seceded from the Union in 1861 and became a strategic target for both North and South because of its location on the Mississippi River.
  
Symbolizing both Arkansas' progress and the state's future promise, a new capitol was built, hosting its first legislative session in 1911.
   
Alma, the "Spinach Capital of the World," was
named for the sweetheart of a nearby postmaster.
    
Local landmarks in Alma Arkansas include an 8-ft statue of Popeye and a water tower painted like a huge can of spinach! This sets the stage for the annual Spinach Festival.
